An electrolyte lotion is applied to the epidermis, and the skin is gently drawn into the tip of the handpiece. This in essence folds the skin, placing the deep dermal tissue and target collagen in a straight line with the radio frequency(RF) source and ground. As RF energy is produced, it travels a straight line between the two pads. Virtually invisible to the epidermis, it reaches the resistance of the dermis and a volume of heat is generated. As the temperature of the dermis is raised above 60° C, collagen denatures and the fibrils contract and thicken. The patient is comfortable and only experiences a gentle warming sensation. In the months following treatment, the body's natural wound healing processes remove the damaged collagen and lay down new collagen which is thicker, more organized and has a structure similar to that found in younger and less damaged skin. The result is a firmer and more youthful look.
